Test the Chain With a Retrieval Exercise
Before release, run a simple retrieval exercise. Give a reviewer one finished-part identifier and ask for the drawing revision, work order, incoming material reference, and applicable source record. Set a practical target such as retrieving the four connected artifacts in 10 minutes from the records the team actually uses. Where access matters, the point is not to establish a universal audit threshold; it is to find out whether the chain can be followed without private knowledge.
If the exercise fails, record where it failed. Perhaps the part label leads to the work order but not to the received lot. Perhaps the material record is available but no one can tell which staged pieces used it. Do not guess. One precise gap supports a focused correction. A broad statement that “traceability needs improvement” usually creates another document without repairing the connection.
